Blog's Origin Story

Recently I had this idea about how Adam and Eve (the FIRST parents ever) had to be the WORST parents ever! You know? They literally could not relate to their children, because they never were kids themselves. They had no idea what was going on as their offspring grew up... There are so many questions as a parent that I search online or poor over parenting books or ask older moms about (or don't and they give me advice anyway :P ) that I can't imagine how they figured it all out. Here's a few thoughts I've had on the subject:

  • How did Adam and Eve know what to do and what was happening during labor and delivery?
  • Did they cut the umbilical cord? I'd imagine it was quite the outie and also quite a surprise if Adam and Eve didn't have belly buttons. (If they did, maybe not such a surprise...)
  • How did Eve realize that she should feed Abel (the first child ever born) from her breast?
  • What about when he didn't latch on right away?
  • When Abel didn't speak or do hardly anything (for a long time as newborns do), did they think he was broken?
  • No one else was there to make meals or give Adam and Eve any sort of break! Ugh!
  • On the flip side, no one was there to "mom shame". Must have been nice.
  • What about when Cain was born? I'm sure the pregnancy, birth, and other milestones were not exactly like Abel... How did they not go crazy worrying about their second child without all the encouragement that "every child is different"?
  • Discipline... what techniques did they use to teach those rebellious little rascals? (Of course, Adam and Eve were the ones to bring sin into the world and pass it on, but still!)
  • Puberty!!!!! :-O
  • "The birds and the bees"... along with the fact that the only girls were their daughters ... You think your conversation about this was awkward? We can only imagine.
  • Of course then you get into adulthood. Would you (as Adam and Eve's kids) take parenting advice from the best AND worst parents ever, since they are the only other parents on the planet?

As you can see this is only the tip of the iceberg. There is a whole world of material here that could be covered! At first I thought about passing this idea off to some funny friends of mine to make a video series... but why not try sharing my own perspective on it first? After all, I'm embarking on parenthood myself and it's definitely interesting to compare my own experiences with what Adam and Eve might have gone through so many thousands of years ago!

Feel free to comment below with other thoughts this post has spurred in your mind and if you would find this interesting to read periodically as I had different realizations. :)
